Toyota MIRAI "How much is hydrogen?" "How much does it fit?" "How long does it run with 1kg?"

I got on a Toyota MIRAI and entered a gas station in the city center. It's not because of the wrong reason, but because of the car wash. When I received the cleaned MIRAI, the clerk asked me. "How much hydrogen does it contain?" When I answered, "Is it about 5.6 kg?", He said with a surprised expression, "Well, is that so?" "How much does hydrogen cost?" "It costs 1100 yen per kg and you can run about 100km with 1kg." "Yeah yeah."

The hydrogen loading capacity of the first MIRAI released in 2014 was about 4.6 kg, but the hydrogen loading capacity of the second generation MIRAI released in 2020 was about 5.6 kg. Increasing the amount of hydrogen loaded was an important development theme for the second generation MIRAI. The new MIRAI wears 20-inch wheels (optional, standard 19-inch) to increase hydrogen loading.

It's natural that it doesn't come with a pin. A large diameter wheel was adopted to increase the diameter of the hydrogen tank mounted under the floor. The larger the diameter of the wheel, the higher the height from the ground to the axle. Before that, I switched from the original front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. The platform uses the GA-L platform of TNGA used by Lexus LS and LS.

トヨタMIRAI 「水素っていくらですか?」「どのくらい入るんですか?」「1kgでどのくらい走るんですか?」

The Lexus LS and LC have an engine mounted on the front and use a propeller shaft to transmit power to the rear to drive the rear wheels. The second-generation MIRAI is equipped with an FC stack on the front that takes out electricity by reacting oxygen in the air with hydrogen installed in the tank. The rear wheels are driven by a motor mounted on the rear. Electricity can be sent by cable. I didn't need a propeller shaft, so instead I put a 64ℓ hydrogen tank in the center tunnel. Since I wanted to use this center tunnel as a storage space for hydrogen tanks, it can be said that the GA-L platform was adopted. Thanks to that, I also got a well-built suspension.

The total volume is 141 liters with a total of three tanks, 52 liters under the rear seats and 25 liters under the luggage compartment. Gasoline has a capacity of about 105 kg, but hydrogen is stored at 70 MPa (about 700 atm) with increased pressure and weighs about 5.6 kg. For those who routinely come into contact with 40ℓ (about 30kg) or 50ℓ (about 37.5kg) of gasoline, it is natural that 5.6kg would be "that kind of thing?" That's why I run 500km. The problem is the low volumetric energy density of hydrogen, which requires a tank capacity of 141 liters to load 5.6 kg of hydrogen.

If you want to load a big tank, you have to make a big car. MIRAI has big wheels, but big figures. The total length x width x height is 4975 x 1885 x 1470 mm. Compared to the original MIRAI, the overall length is 85 mm longer, the overall width is 70 mm wider, and the overall height is 65 mm lower. The original MIRAI was uncomfortable because the seating position was high but the foot position was also high, but the new Mirai has been able to lower the seating position and overall height because the FC stack was moved from under the front seat to on the front axle. .. There is no sense of discomfort regarding the sitting posture of the driver's seat.

In contrast, the rear seats are a bit cramped (even if I'm 184 cm tall). It's much better than the rear seats of the GR Yaris, and it's necessary and sufficient, but it's not as large as expected from the external size. The feet are barely there, and the overhead is minimum. The opening of the rear door is narrow and it is difficult to put in and take out the legs (aside from the rigidity of the body).

On the other hand, I was impressed by the good closing sound of the door (especially the front). The moment I close it, I feel unconsciously feeling that it's a good car. The steering wheel has a nice grip, but it also feels good when moved. What if the car starts to move gently according to the movement of the right foot, the tires, dampers + springs and inputs are attenuated according to the shape of the road surface, the body is transmitted through the components that make up the suspension, and finally the feeling that is transmitted to the body through the seat. Is comfortable. Before saying that it is a fuel cell vehicle, you can see that MIRAI is a luxury car by running it.

The new MIRAI has a good ride quality, but it is also good that it is overwhelmingly quiet. Road noise and wind noise are well suppressed. When riding a MIRAI, I realize that being "silent" is also valuable. When I pressed the ASC (Active Sound Controller) switch on the right side of the steering wheel, an artificial sound was played from the speaker in conjunction with the output of the motor, but it was too artificial and personally NG. In this case, you should enjoy the silence.

The time required to fill hydrogen is the same as the time required to refuel gasoline. There are variations in business days and hours, and it is difficult to say that there is not always a hydrogen station nearby when you want to fill with hydrogen, but in practice, if you find that you can run 500 km with a full tank, you will run out of hydrogen. No more worries. At least, I didn't feel the excitement (in a bad way) like when I was in an electric car. However, if you buy MIRAI, you should have a hydrogen station nearby.

The value of the new MIRAI is a high-quality ride that makes the rider realize that "this is a luxury car." High quietness that makes you want to describe it as "silence". Besides, the responsiveness that the motor brings is high and smooth running. The maximum output / maximum torque of the motor mounted on the rear is 182ps (134kW) / 300Nm, which is not extremely high output / high torque for a vehicle weight of less than 2 tons, but it is necessary and sufficient. There is also an option to enjoy the motor running (and high quality) with hydrogen instead of charging and enjoying the motor running.
