Patients with atrial fibrillation detected on Apple Watch, often without conventional treatment
According to a cohort study conducted at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center, many patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) found by Apple Watch's irregular heart rate notification feature do not require conventional treatment (The Verge's). Articles, dissertation abstracts).
The study included 1,802 patients who linked the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to the Apple Watch from April 25, 2015 to November 16, 2018. Anticoagulant therapy with anticoagulants is important because AF patients have an increased risk of blood clots. However, of the 1,802 people, there is only a 0.25% chance that Apple Watch will reveal AF and consider anticoagulant therapy, even after looking at EHR data alone, after a new diagnosis of AF. Only about 36% are likely to consider anticoagulant therapy.
Even if AF can be detected, if treatment is not necessary, you will only feel anxious and there is no merit. Researchers cite that anticoagulant therapy is primarily given to older patients and not to younger patients without other risk factors.
